Dr. Janaki Ammal’s groundbreaking work at the Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore laid the foundations for breeding high-yielding, sweeter sugarcane hybrids suitable for Indian climatic conditions. Beyond her contributions to plant genetics, she served as the Director-General of the Botanical Survey of India and co-authored the foundational text The Chromosome Atlas of Cultivated Plants alongside English geneticist C.D.
