Nara Lokesh Targets 100% Literacy in Andhra Pradesh by September 2027 via 'Akshara Andhra'

Andhra Pradesh Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh announced ambitious targets for the state's flagship adult education initiative, Akshara Andhra, directing officials to work in mission mode to achieve 100 percent literacy across the state by September 2027.

Reviewing the performance of the School and Intermediate Education departments, the Minister highlighted that inter-departmental coordination among 11 state entities has enabled significant early progress, elevating the state's literacy rate to 82.1 percent from a baseline of 72.6 percent recorded in 2024.

According to departmental projections presented to the Minister, the state administration aims to bring another 25 lakh non-literate individuals into functional literacy by March 2027, followed by the remaining 27 lakh by September 2027.

Despite the administration's emphasis on official progress reports and recent central validation of adult education examination metrics, political opposition from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has raised concerns regarding the figures. Opposition representatives have pointed to national benchmarks, such as the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which historically positioned the state lower, demanding localized district-wise data breakdowns and third-party verification to validate the reported gains.
