BJP Inducts Parkash Singh Badal's Cousin Bhupinder Dhillon to Expand Base Ahead of 2027 Punjab Polls

In a major strategic push ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) inducted Major Bhupinder Singh Dhillon (retd), cousin and 25-year political adviser to the late Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patriarch Parkash Singh Badal. Joining alongside his son Amarvir Singh Bawa, Dhillon was formally inducted in Chandigarh in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Punjab BJP leadership. The move signals the BJP's deliberate strategy to assimilate traditional Akali Dal networks and expand its independent footprint across rural Punjab, particularly in the Malwa belt and the Badal family's home bastion of Lambi.

By drawing established political figures from prominent rural families, the BJP is attempting to replicate its regional governance model from neighboring Haryana. Dhillon, who served as a state minister between 1997 and 2002 and managed grassroots campaigns in Lambi for decades, brings immediate organizational depth to the BJP's cadre. The induction comes amid evolving political realignments in the state following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP secured an 18.56% vote share, positioning the party to project itself as a primary contender rather than a junior partner in future alliance negotiations.

Key Implications

The induction of Bhupinder Singh Dhillon reflects the BJP's long-term plan to reshape Punjab's political landscape by absorbing traditional Panthic and rural leadership networks. By offering a platform to seasoned leaders from the Akali ecosystem, the party aims to establish deep roots in rural constituencies that were historically dominated by the SAD.

Furthermore, these organizational shifts significantly alter the dynamics of any prospective coalition arrangements in Punjab. As the BJP builds direct linkages with influential local families, it strengthens its bargaining position, signalling that its electoral strategy for 2027 will rely on independent structural growth and grassroots consolidation.
