LONDON: Following India's 27-run defeat in the series-deciding third ODI against England at Lord's, captain Shubman Gill delivered a sharp critique regarding the team's ongoing fitness concerns. Gill urged a comprehensive overhaul of physical standards across the squad, noting that frequent injuries have severely dented team stability and tactical execution.

Despite a fighting 138 from veteran opener Rohit Sharma, India's depleted bowling attack conceded 387 runs, allowing England to seal the three-match ODI series 2-1.

Frequent Lineup Disruptions Ahead of 2027 World Cup

Gill expressed frustration after India was forced to field a heavily altered playing XI at Lord's due to key players suffering fitness setbacks throughout the tour. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah missed the final match due to a knee injury sustained in Cardiff, joining Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy on the sidelines.

Addressing the press post-match, Gill highlighted the impossibility of building squad cohesion when players fail to complete short series:

• Lineup Instability: "If you look at the first squad we announced, at least five players did not play today. When one or two players get injured, you have to play different combinations. If a player is missing after every match, somewhere we are missing a trick."
• World Cup Standards: "Keeping the World Cup in mind, where we have to play 11 matches in a row, here our players are unable to finish a two-to-three-match series. They play one or two matches, suffer a niggle, and force a forced change. As a group, we need to improve our fitness."
