Shubman Gill Suffers Elbow Injury Scare Ahead of West Indies ODI Series

India captain Shubman Gill suffered an injury scare during a practice session in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, September 25, after being struck on his right elbow by a rising delivery from fast bowler Mohammed Siraj. The incident occurred just two days before India's opening ODI against the West Indies.

Gill Hit by Siraj Delivery in Nets

Gill was batting in the nets during India's training session when a length delivery from Siraj climbed sharply and struck him on the right elbow. The India captain immediately stopped batting and walked away from the nets in visible discomfort.

Siraj quickly checked on Gill, while Virat Kohli, who was training in an adjacent net, also went across to see how the captain was doing. The team's physiotherapist attended to Gill, and support staff subsequently strapped his arm and provided treatment.

Gill spent a significant period on the sidelines with an ice pack applied to the affected area. He did not resume his regular batting practice after the incident during the session, although he appeared more comfortable later and was seen interacting with members of the team.

Fitness Concern Before Series Opener

The incident has raised concerns about Gill's availability for the first ODI against the West Indies, scheduled to be played at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27. With only a limited amount of recovery time available before the match, his fitness will be closely monitored by India's team management.

Reports following the incident indicated that there was no immediate official confirmation that Gill would miss the opening match. The seriousness of the blow and his recovery over the following day will determine whether he is cleared to take part in the series opener.

Gill Had Earlier Faced Injury Concern

The latest incident comes after Gill also sustained a blow to his ring finger during preparations for India's Test series in Sri Lanka last month. He recovered from that setback and went on to feature in the Tests.

The latest elbow blow therefore represents another fitness concern for India's captain shortly before an international assignment. The team management is expected to assess Gill's condition before finalising the playing XI for the opening ODI.

India Managing Several Injury Concerns

India have dealt with a number of injury-related issues involving members of the squad during the year. Several players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar, have previously missed matches during or around India's limited-overs commitments.

Speaking about the team's injury situation, bowling coach Morne Morkel acknowledged that injuries are an unavoidable part of professional cricket but said the team would ideally like to have its strongest available squad on the field.

“Obviously, you want to have your strongest and, condition-wise, the best XI on the field,” Morkel said.

Morkel also pointed to India's depth and the opportunities available to players waiting for their chance. He expressed hope that the team's injury concerns would ease as the season progresses.

West Indies Series Begins Sunday

India are scheduled to play three ODIs against the West Indies, with the first match taking place in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27. The remaining matches are scheduled for September 30 in Guwahati and October 3 in New Chandigarh.

Gill is set to lead India's ODI side, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain. The squad also includes established players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj, alongside several younger players.

The West Indies will be led by Shai Hope and have named a squad featuring players including John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie and Jayden Seales.

Gill's Recovery to Be Closely Watched

For India, the immediate priority will be determining the extent of Gill's elbow injury and whether he can safely bat and lead the side in the opening ODI. The captain's condition is expected to remain a key talking point in the lead-up to the match.

The incident did not immediately result in confirmation of a serious injury, and Gill was later seen appearing more comfortable around the team. However, with the first ODI only a short time away, India's medical and support staff will have limited time to assess his recovery.

The final decision on Gill's participation is therefore expected to depend on his fitness assessment and his ability to bat without discomfort during the final stages of preparation.
