Supreme Court Awaits Prosecution Sanction Decision in MP Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah Case

The legal proceedings surrounding Madhya Pradesh Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah reached a crucial juncture before the Supreme Court as the State government submitted that a final decision regarding prosecution sanction is expected imminently from the Governor. The matter stems from a May 2025 speech in which Shah made controversial remarks targeting Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi—who had briefed the media during Operation Sindoor—referring to her as a "sister of terrorists". The Madhya Pradesh High Court had previously taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and directed the police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against the minister.

A Supreme Court Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant previously expressed deep disapproval of the remarks, characterizing them as "crass and thoughtless" and rejecting the minister's initial conditional apologies. To ensure an impartial investigation, the apex court stayed Shah's arrest and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from outside the Madhya Pradesh cadre.
